On the lead up to going into labour your hormone levels change which can bring about various changes and these can be good indications that birth is just around the corner. Signs to look out for include:
* Increase in discharge.
This is the body's way of preparing the birth canal for labour. The extra hormones help to produce more discharge which cleans the birth canal ready for the baby to pass through. You may notice your discharge is tinged with red or pink, this is known as 'the show' or 'mucus plug' which is the plug which has been blocking your cervix. Once 'the show' happens it usually means that labour is a matter of a day or two away.
* Nesting.
The sudden desire to prepare the home for baby's arrival can be a sign that labour is nearing. Some women may not have had any energy to do anything but suddenly they feel a sudden need to tidy or clean a particular area of the house. This is known as the nesting instinct.
* Lightening.
Lightening is where the baby moves down into the pelvis. As the pelvis softens ready for birth your baby is able to move down into it so will take some of the pressure away from your lungs. This can help with being able to breathe easier and can also make heartburn better. It does, however, mean that you may have pelvis pain and find it difficult to walk.
* Increased bowel movements.
Usually a day or so before labour begins you will find yourself needing to empty your bowels more often. This is to try to empty the bowel ready for the pushing stage of labour. Increased bowel movements can also help labour to begin as the muscles in the bowel affect those around the pelvis.
It is important to remember that some women experience all of the above symptoms, some may experience one or two whilst others may not notice any at all so it is not an exact science but something you may look out for. If you are at all concerned about symptoms you are having then you should contact your health provider.
